The Hebrew word rendered “banner” in Psalms 20:5, today’s title, is the three times used word dagal, meaning to raise a flag, as in to make it conspicuous. The two other times it’s used are by Solomon in the Song of Solomon 5:10 & 6:10 where the context defines its fuller meaning.

In these two appearances (of dagal) the LORD, through (in) Solomon, is describing His appearing, to His two armies, in church and state, with/in/as Judah and Israel. They, “terrible as an army with banners,” are said to be looking for the one Solomon describes as the beloved, “the chiefest among ten thousand.”

These are those the LORD describes, in Isaiah, saying, “18 Behold, I and the children whom the LORD has given me are for signs and for wonders in Israel from the LORD of hosts, which dwells in mount Zion. 19 And when they shall say unto you, Seek unto them that have familiar spirits [the known dead], and unto wizards [experts using their words to deceive] that peep, and that mutter: should not a people seek unto their God? [Should they be looking] for the living to the dead? 20 [Or] To the law and to the testimony[?]: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light [no understanding] in them.”

Friends, I say again, the LORD is risen in me, His beloved, and has sent me to raise His army. We are His goodly horse and chariot in the battle at hand. This is the resurrection of the dead.

Joshua 5
6 For the children of Israel walked forty years in the wilderness, till all the people that were men of war, which came out of Egypt, were consumed, because they obeyed not the voice of the LORD: unto whom the LORD swore that he would not show them the land, which the LORD swore unto their fathers that he would give us, a land that flows with milk and honey.
7 And their children [us], whom he raised up in their stead, them Joshua circumcised [Jesus, Jehovah’s salvation personified, is revealing to us who is in our flesh: all those the LORD promised He would raise to life, the true us]: for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them by the way.
8 And it came to pass, when they had done circumcising all the people, that they abode in their places in the camp, till they were whole [became one under the LORD’s lead].
9 And the LORD said unto Joshua, This day have I rolled away the reproach of Egypt from off you. Wherefore the name of the place is called Gilgal [the wheel within the wheel, the swirling waters, the LORD word sent forward to awaken us, as we see the pattern and understand it in our time] unto this day.
10 And the children of Israel encamped in Gilgal, and kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month at even in the plains of Jericho [the moon, meaning civil government, when the wall that has kept the LORD out will fall].
11 And they did eat of the old corn of the land on the morrow after the Passover, unleavened cakes, and parched corn in the selfsame day [these are speaking of the original foundations upon which this nation was built, under the law of nature and nature’s God].
12 And the manna ceased [the word of God that was unknown is now known to be the word of His mouth, by which only does man live] on the morrow after they had eaten of the old corn of the land; neither had the children of Israel manna anymore [they were not ignorant any longer]; but they did eat of the fruit of the land of Canaan [the promised land, in the hand of the those who listen to other gods] that year.
13 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Are you for us, or for our adversaries?
14 And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What says my LORD unto his servant?
15 And the captain of the LORD’s host said unto Joshua, Loose your shoe from off your foot; for the place whereon you stand is holy. And Joshua did so.

Hebrews 2
3 How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the LORD, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;

12 Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib [of truly noble people].
13 Return, return, O Shulamite [those the LORD has perfected – who need nothing further]; return, return, that we may look upon you. What will you see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.

Psalms 20
1 The LORD hear you in the day of trouble; the name of the God of Jacob defend you;

Psalms 120

As we have, here again is the next in the sequential reposts from January, wherein the LORD foretold and brought to light this day. “And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us, therefore, cast off the works of darkness [ignorance], and let us put on the armor of light [the protection of understanding].”

But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: you shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end.

The word above rendered “everlasting,” ‘owlam, is then, with the word ‘ad, rendered “world without end. The verse is defining the condition from which we are saved, the old world, ashamed and confounded, in ruins, upon which the new is built.

Isaiah 45
15 Truly you are a God that hides yourself, O God of Israel, the Savior.
16 They shall be ashamed, and also confounded, all of them: they shall go to confusion together that are makers of idols.
17 But Israel [those His light has lighted on, like a dove] shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting [‘owlam] salvation: you shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end [‘owlam ‘ad].
18 For thus says the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he has established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.
19 I have not spoken in secret, in a dark place of the earth: I said not unto the seed of Jacob, Seek you me in vain: I the LORD speak righteousness, I declare things that are right.
20 Assemble yourselves and come; draw near together, you that are escaped of the nations: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven image, and pray unto a god that cannot save.

24 Surely, shall one say, in the LORD have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed.
25 In the LORD shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.

The word three times above rendered “ashamed,” the Hebrew word buwsh, also appears three times, in verses 9 & 11 of the chapter before, there also translated as “ashamed.” The shame it describes is among God’s people who have created idols they call their god. These are the old wastes, which have by these abominations become totally desolate. The LORD says He has come to redeem His people (from the hand of the misleaders who’ve led them there) to rebuild them into a new creation upon the dust and ashes.

The same word is used in Jeremiah 9:19 where it is “confounded.” It is first used in Genesis 2:25 to tell of when Adam and Eve were still naked, and were not “ashamed.” Their self-perceived shame, and their hiding from God because of it, were brought on by the confounding resulting from following the misleading of the serpent, whose venom was in his mouth. As we saw in the prior post, the confounding of the waters, the corruption of men’s words mixed with the truth (the word of God now poured out from heaven to overcome the waters from below) is the flood that now covers and ended the old world, as it did in the days of Noah. In the new creation, the waters above are separated from the waters below, in the firmament, the great expansion of deep meaning. This separation, where understanding is restored, un-confounds the waters and removes the source of shame, is called the new heaven.

Job, in Job 19:3 speaks of this “shame.” The context is describing the suffering that comes at the hand of the children of Cain among us, forever attacking and falsely accusing the children of God whose suffering is at their hand (and venom from their mouths).

Revelation 11
15 And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our LORD, and of his Christ; and he shall reign forever and ever.
16 And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God,
17 Saying, We give you thanks, O LORD God Almighty, which are, and was, and are to come; because you have taken to you your great power, and have reigned.
18 And the nations were angry, and your wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that you should give reward unto your servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear your name, small and great; and should destroy them which [by their misleading] destroy the [have destroyed the old] earth.
19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven, and there was seen in his temple the ark of his testament [the word now flooding down from there]: and there were lightnings, and voices, and thunderings, and an earthquake, and great hail.

Ephesians 3
9 And to make all men see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world has been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:
10 To the intent that now unto the principalities and powers in heavenly places might be known by the church the manifold wisdom of God,

12 In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
13 Wherefore I desire that you faint not at my tribulations for you, which is your glory.

Jeremiah 9
1 Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears, that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people!
2 Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
3 And they bend their tongues like their bow for lies: but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, says the LORD.
4 Take you heed every one of his neighbor, and trust you not in any brother: for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbor will walk with slanders.

9 Shall I not visit them for these things? says the LORD: shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this?
10 For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled; they are gone.
11 And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant.
12 Who is the wise man, that may understand this? and who is he to whom the mouth of the LORD has spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perishes and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passes through?
13 And the LORD says, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein;
14 But have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them:
15 Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink.
16 I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known: and I will send a sword after them, till I have consumed them.

18 And let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eyes may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters.

Job 19

2 How long will you vex my soul, and break me in pieces with words?
3 These ten times have you reproached me: you are not ashamed [buwsh] that you make yourselves strange to me.
4 And be it indeed that I have erred, mine error remains with myself.
5 If indeed you will magnify yourselves against me, and plead against me my reproach:
6 Know now that God has overthrown me, and has compassed me with his net.
7 Behold, I cry out of wrong, but I am not heard: I cry aloud, but there is no judgment.
8 He has fenced up my way that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness in my paths.
9 He has stripped me of my glory, and taken the crown from my head.

7 Send your hand from above; rid me, and deliver me out of great waters, from the hand of strange children;
8 Whose mouth speaks vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood.
9 I will sing a new song unto you, O God: upon a psaltery and an instrument of ten strings will I sing praises unto you.
10 It is he that gives salvation unto kings: who delivers David his servant from the hurtful sword.
11 Rid me, and deliver me from the hand of strange children, whose mouth speaks vanity, and their right hand is a right hand of falsehood:
12 That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace:
13 That our garners may be full, affording all manner of store: that our sheep may bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our streets:
14 That our oxen may be strong to labor; that there be no breaking in, nor going out; that there be no complaining in our streets.
15 Happy is that people, that is in such a case: yea, happy is that people, whose God is the LORD.
