All this assembly shall know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear [of man]: for the battle is the LORD’s, and He will give you into our hands.
The above is 1 Samuel 17:47, and is David speaking to Goliath the champion of the Philistines. The name Philistine means immigrants, here an invading army gathered against Israel in Judah, between Shochoh and Azekah, in Ephesdammim. These names tell us the objective of the invading immigrants was to become entwined, mixed with God’s people, and thereby fence them about with what would drain away and end their nation and life. This battle was in Judah, which we know represents the leaders and rulers of God’s people.
We understand Goliath represents those championing the immigrant invasion. He is said to be from Gath, meaning winepress and speaking of God’s judgment: as in what He warned against arriving.
Saul (the king they desired) and the men of Israel are said to be camped near the valley of Elah; the name meaning oak tree and referring us to Genesis 35:4. There we are told of when Jacob gathered all the strange gods and buried them under an oak tree by Shechem, a burden, which is a valley between Mount Ebal and Mount Gerizim, names meaning becoming barren and cutting off. This is where Israel was gathered, at a place where the idols had been taken away, as they were coming near to making Saul their idol, and which was resulting in the invasion. This is why David then comes to prominence, to stop God’s people from falling into worshiping their leaders as their new idols/gods.
In 1 Samuel 17:4 we are told, in a pattern, Israel and the Philistines are gathered on these two mountains, saying, “3 And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them.” In this valley of the oak (Elah) is where David and Goliath meet. The name Goliath appears to be the name Gath with the word ‘elah inserted into its middle; meaning the strength of wrath, which David brings down with sling and stone. The word (name) ‘elah is from ‘ayil, meaning strength, specifically a chief (politically), who is cast into the winepress.
All of this said, now on to the revelation, the meaning in God’s written word uncovered.
Genesis 34 tells us Shechem is the son of Hamor, the Hivite, who rapes Dinah the daughter of Leah and Jacob. The names tells of the burden (Shechem), the beast of burden (Hamor) that carries it, who is mixed among (Hivite) God’s people. Dinah means judgment, which is here defiled by the burden, the idols that corrupt good judgment, which comes from being wearied (Leah) by those who bear these ideas that defile judgment.
Simeon and Levi eventually (with a sword) kill Hamor and Shechem and plunder their city. It is plunder, including the idols, strange gods, which defiled good judgment, that Jacob purged from among his house, family, and buried in Bethel (God’s family) under the oak tree near Shechem.
The point here is found when we are told of Deborah (who had nursed Jacob, her first and only mention in Genesis) dying and being buried in the same place under the oak. Deborah is from the word deborah, from the word dabar. These words mean an orderly arrangement, as in the order, the dibrah, discussed in the prior post, which, in Psalms 110:4 describes the order of Melchisedec.
Genesis 35
1 And God said unto Jacob, Arise, go up to Bethel, and dwell there: and make there an altar unto God, that appeared unto you when you fled from the face of Esau your brother.
2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:
3 And let us arise, and go up to Bethel; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.
4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem.
5 And they journeyed: and the terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.
6 So Jacob came to Luz [departure], which is in the land of Canaan, that is, Bethel [is the family of God], he and all the people that were with him.
7 And he built there an altar, and called the place Elbethel [God of the family of God]: because there God appeared unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.
8 But Deborah, Rebekah’s nurse died, and she was buried beneath Bethel under an oak: and the name of it was called Allonbachuth [oak of weeping – mourning the death of the family order that is the strength of God’s people – which is depicted in Simeon and Levi killing Shechem and Hamor with a sword, and taking their idols – Genesis 34:25 thru 31].
9 And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came out of Padanaram, and blessed him.
10 And God said unto him, Your name is Jacob: your name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be your name: and he called his name Israel.
11 And God said unto him, I am God Almighty: be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of you, and kings shall come out of your loins;
12 And the land which I gave Abraham and Isaac, to you I will give it, and to your seed after you will I give the land.
13 And God went up from him in the place where he talked with him.
14 And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where he talked with him, even a pillar of stone: and he poured a drink offering thereon, and he poured oil thereon.
15 And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel [the family of God].
1 Samuel 17
41 And the Philistine [the champion of the immigrants] came on and drew near unto David; and the man that bare the shield went before him.
42 And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance.
43 And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that you come to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.
44 And the Philistine said to David, Come to me, and I will give your flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field.
45 Then said David to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
46 This day will the LORD deliver you into mine hand; and I will smite you, and take your head from you; and I will give the carcasses of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel.
47 And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saves not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give you into our hands.
48 And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine.
49 And David put his hand in his bag, and took thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead; and he fell upon his face to the earth.
50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David.
51 Therefore David ran, and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled.
As we see, our God doesn’t use a sword and spear, but rather a sling and stone in the hand of those He sends in His name.
We are told later in 1 Samuel 25:29 that LORD slings out the enemies, in this case, his name was Nabal (sounds to me like Nadler), whose folly was against David. The word rendered sling, above in verse 40 & 50, and in 25:29, is the same Hebrew word, qela’.
1 Samuel 25
23 And when Abigail [{her father is} the father of joy] saw David, she hasted, and lighted off the donkey, and fell before David on her face, and bowed herself to the ground,
24 And fell at his feet, and said, Upon me, my lord, upon me let this iniquity be: and let your handmaid, I pray you, speak in your audience, and hear the words of your handmaid.
25 Let not my lord, I pray you, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I your handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom you did send.
26 Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD lives, and as your soul lives, seeing the LORD has withheld you from coming to shed blood, and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now let your enemies, and they that seek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.
27 And now this blessing which your handmaid has brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that follow my lord.
28 I pray you, forgive the trespass of your handmaid: for the LORD will certainly make my lord a sure house; because my lord fights the battles of the LORD, and evil has not been found in you all your days.
29 Yet a man is risen to pursue you, and to seek your soul: but the soul of my lord shall be bound in the bundle of life with the LORD your God; and the souls of your enemies, them shall he sling [qala’] out, as out of the middle of a sling [qela’].
30 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD shall have done to my lord according to all the good that he has spoken concerning you, and shall have appointed you ruler over Israel;
31 That this shall be no grief unto you, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that you have shed blood causeless, or that my lord has avenged himself: but when the LORD shall have dealt well with my lord, then remember your handmaid.
32 And David said to Abigail, Blessed be the LORD God of Israel, which sent you this day to meet me:
33 And blessed be your advice, and blessed be you, which have kept me this day from coming to shed blood, and from avenging myself with mine own hand.
This is the same sling spoken on in Zechariah 9:15.
Zechariah 9
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, your King comes unto you: he is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon a donkey, and upon a colt the foal of a donkey.
10 And I will cut off the chariot from Ephraim, and the horse from Jerusalem, and the battle bow shall be cut off: and he shall speak peace unto the heathen: and his dominion shall be from sea even to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.
11 As for you also, by the blood of your covenant I have sent forth your prisoners out of the pit wherein is no water.
12 Turn you to the strong hold, you prisoners of hope: even to day do I declare that I will render double unto you;
13 When I have bent Judah for me, filled the bow with Ephraim, and raised up your sons, O Zion, against your sons, O Greece, and made you as the sword of a mighty man.
14 And the LORD shall be seen over them, and his arrow shall go forth as the lightning: and the LORD God shall blow the trumpet, and shall go with whirlwinds of the south.
15 The LORD of hosts shall defend them; and they shall devour, and subdue with sling stones; and they shall drink, and make a noise as through wine; and they shall be filled like bowls, and as the corners of the altar.
16 And the LORD their God shall save them in that day as the flock of his people: for they shall be as the stones of a crown, lifted up as an ensign upon his land.
17 For how great is his goodness, and how great is his beauty! corn shall make the young men cheerful, and new wine the maids.
Zechariah 10
1 Ask you of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds [the light of His understanding shall be seen in the cloud], and give them showers of rain [and His word will again return to the earth], to every one grass in the field.
2 For the idols have spoken vanity, and the diviners have seen a lie, and have told false dreams; they comfort in vain: therefore they went their way as a flock, they were troubled, because there was no shepherd.
3 Mine anger was kindled against the shepherds, and I punished the goats: for the LORD of hosts has visited his flock the house of Judah, and has made them as his goodly horse in the battle.
4 Out of him came forth the corner, out of him the nail, out of him the battle bow, out of him every oppressor together.
5 And they shall be as mighty men, which tread down their enemies in the mire of the streets in the battle: and they shall fight, because the LORD is with them, and the riders on horses shall be confounded.
6 And I will strengthen the house of Judah [God’s leaders], and I will save the house of Joseph, and I will bring them again to place them; for I have mercy upon them: and they shall be as though I had not cast them off: for I am the LORD their God, and will hear them.
7 And they of Ephraim [God’s people in this generation, upon whom has come this second blessing] shall be like a mighty man, and their heart shall rejoice as through wine: yea, their children shall see it, and be glad; their heart shall rejoice in the LORD.
8 I will hiss for them, and gather them; for I have redeemed them: and they shall increase as they have increased.
9 And I will sow them among the people: and they shall remember me in far countries; and they shall live with their children, and turn again.
The verb qala’ appears in Jeremiah 10:18, where it is translated “sling.”
Jeremiah 10
1 Hear you the word which the LORD speaks unto you, O house of Israel:
2 Thus says the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the people are vain: for one cuts a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe.
4 They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.
5 They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good.
6 Forasmuch as there is none like unto you, O LORD; you are great, and your name is great in might.
7 Who would not fear you, O King of nations? for to you does it appertain: forasmuch as among all the wise men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto you.
8 But they are altogether brutish and foolish: the stock is a doctrine of vanities.
9 Silver spread into plates is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.
10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth shall tremble, and the nations shall not be able to abide his indignation.
11 Thus shall you say unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they shall perish from the earth, and from under these heavens.
12 He has made the earth by his power, he has established the world by his wisdom, and has stretched out the heavens by his discretion.
13 When he utters his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; he makes lightning with rain, and brings forth the wind out of his treasures.
14 Every man is brutish in his knowledge: every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their visitation they shall perish.
16 The portion of Jacob is not like them: for he is the former of all things; and Israel is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hosts is his name.
17 Gather up your wares out of the land, O inhabitant of the fortress.
18 For thus says the LORD, Behold, I will sling [qala’] out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so.
19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous; but I said, Truly this is a grief, and I must bear it.
20 My tabernacle is spoiled, and all my cords are broken: my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to stretch forth my tent any more, and to set up my curtains.
21 For the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the LORD: therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered.
22 Behold, the noise of the bruit is come, and a great commotion out of the north country, to make the cities of Judah desolate, and a den of dragons.
23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walks to direct his steps.
24 O LORD, correct me, but with judgment; not in your anger, lest you bring me to nothing.
25 Pour out your fury upon the heathen that know you not, and upon the families that call not on your name: for they have eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and consumed him, and have made his habitation desolate.
The only other time the name Deborah appears it is in Judges 4 & 5, speaking of the order (of Melchisedec), embodied in her, awakened to judge God’s people. It is describing the pattern occurring in this generation and the judgment of all the world.
Judges 4
1 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the LORD, when Ehud [unity and order] was dead.
2 And the LORD sold them into the hand of Jabin [the self-called wisdom of man] king of Canaan [the degenerate world], that reigned in Hazor [who reign in the palaces of the earth]; the captain of whose host was Sisera [who were arrayed for battle] , which dwelt in Harosheth of the Gentiles [among the mighty men, the famous and renowned of the earth, who know not God].
3 And the children of Israel cried unto the LORD: for he had nine hundred chariots of iron; and twenty years he mightily oppressed the children of Israel.
4 And Deborah [the order – returned and raised in judgment], a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth [the flaming fire – the consuming fire of God], she judged Israel at that time.
5 And she dwelt under the palm tree [tomer – only appearing here and in Jeremiah 10:5 above] of Deborah between Ramah [the betrayal into idolatry] and Bethel [the family of God] in mount Ephraim [in the current generation, upon whom has come the second blessing]: and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment.
6 And she sent and called Barak [lightning – flashed to understanding] the son of Abinoam [into agreement – with God] out of Kedeshnaphtali [wrestling with God’s correction into holiness], and said unto him, Has not the LORD God of Israel commanded, saying, Go and draw toward mount Tabor [become broken], and take with you ten thousand men of the children of Naphtali [those still wrestling with God] and of the children of Zebulun [who have exalted themselves, are out of order, and have therefore rejected God’s commandments]?
7 And I will draw unto you to the river Kishon Sisera [those who are trapped in their own words, by which they battle against Christ in me], the captain of Jabin’s army [the worldly wisdom that exalts itself against the knowledge and understanding of God], with his chariots and his multitude; and I will deliver him into your hand.
8 And Barak [lightning – understanding] said unto her, If you will go with me, then I will go: but if you will not go with me, then I will not go.
9 And she said, I will surely go with you: notwithstanding the journey that you takest shall not be for your honor; for the LORD shall sell Sisera [those set against Him in battle array] into the hand of a woman. And Deborah [the order] arose, and went with Barak [understanding] to Kedesh [to holiness].
10 And Barak [understanding] called Zebulun [the self-exalted] and Naphtali [the wrestlers] to Kedesh [to holiness]; and he went up with ten thousand men at his feet: and Deborah went up with him.
11 Now Heber the Kenite [the community mingled with antichrists], which was of the children of Hobab [those hidden therein] the father in law of Moses, had severed himself from the Kenites [antichrists], and pitched his tent unto the plain of Zaanaim [the place of their removal], which is by Kedesh [holiness].
12 And they shewed Sisera [those arrayed for battle] that Barak [understanding] the son of Abinoam [into agreement with God] was gone up to mount Tabor [was leading people into rising by becoming broken – subordination to the order and will of God].
13 And Sisera [those arrayed for battle] gathered together all his chariots, even nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people that were with him, from Harosheth of the Gentiles unto the river of Kishon.
14 And Deborah said unto Barak, Up; for this is the day in which the LORD has delivered Sisera into your hand: is not the LORD gone out before you? So Barak went down from mount Tabor, and ten thousand men after him.
15 And the LORD discomfited Sisera, and all his chariots, and all his host, with the edge of the sword before Barak; so that Sisera lighted down off his chariot, and fled away on his feet.
16 But Barak pursued after the chariots, and after the host, unto Harosheth of the Gentiles: and all the host of Sisera fell upon the edge of the sword; and there was not a man left.
17 Howbeit Sisera fled away on his feet to the tent of Jael the wife of Heber the Kenite: for there was peace between Jabin the king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite.
18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said unto him, Turn in, my LORD, turn in to me; fear not. And when he had turned in unto her into the tent, she covered him with a mantle.
19 And he said unto her, Give me, I pray you, a little water to drink; for I am thirsty. And she opened a bottle of milk, and gave him drink, and covered him.
20 Again he said unto her, Stand in the door of the tent, and it shall be, when any man does come and enquire of you, and say, Is there any man here? that you shall say, No.
21 Then Jael Heber’s wife took a nail of the tent, and took an hammer in her hand, and went softly unto him, and smote the nail into his temples, and fastened it into the ground: for he was fast asleep and weary. So he died.
22 And, behold, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said unto him, Come, and I will shew you the man whom you seekest. And when he came into her tent, behold, Sisera lay dead, and the nail was in his temples.
23 So God subdued on that day Jabin the king of Canaan before the children of Israel.
24 And the hand of the children of Israel prospered, and prevailed against Jabin the king of Canaan, until they had destroyed Jabin king of Canaan.
Judges 5
1 Then sang Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam on that day, saying,
2 Praise you the LORD for the avenging of Israel, when the people willingly offered themselves.
3 Hear, O you kings; give ear, O you princes; I, even I, will sing unto the LORD; I will sing praise to the LORD God of Israel.
4 LORD, when you went out of Seir, when you marched out of the field of Edom, the earth trembled, and the heavens dropped, the clouds also dropped water.
5 The mountains melted from before the LORD, even that Sinai from before the LORD God of Israel.
6 In the days of Shamgar [the desolation] the son of Anath [the answer – that causes man to pay attention], in the days of Jael [in the day of Jehovah God], the highways were unoccupied, and the travelers walked through byways.
7 The inhabitants of the villages ceased, they ceased in Israel, until that I Deborah arose, that I arose a mother in Israel.
8 They chose new gods; then was war in the gates: was there a shield or spear seen among forty thousand in Israel?
9 My heart is toward the governors of Israel, that offered themselves willingly among the people. Bless you the LORD.
10 Speak, you that ride on white donkeys, you that sit in judgment, and walk by the way.
11 They that are delivered from the noise of archers in the places of drawing water, there shall they rehearse the righteous acts of the LORD, even the righteous acts toward the inhabitants of his villages in Israel: then shall the people of the LORD go down to the gates.
12 Awake, awake, Deborah [order]: awake, awake, utter a song: arise, Barak [understanding], and lead your captivity captive, you son of Abinoam [of agreement with God].
13 Then he made him that remains have dominion over the nobles among the people: the LORD made me have dominion over the mighty.
14 Out of Ephraim was there a root of them against Amalek [the king whose ways agitate and disrupt the peace of God’s people]; after you, Benjamin, among your people; out of Machir came down governors, and out of Zebulun they that handle the pen of the writer.
15 And the princes of Issachar were with Deborah; even Issachar, and also Barak: he was sent on foot into the valley. For the divisions of Reuben there were great thoughts of heart.
16 Why abode you among the sheepfolds, to hear the bleating of the flocks? For the divisions of Reuben there was great searching of heart.
17 Gilead [this heap of testimony] abode beyond Jordan [descended into death]: and why did Dan [the judges] remain in ships [not immerse themselves in judgment]? Asher continued on the sea shore, and abode in his breaches.
18 Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeopardized their lives unto the death in the high places of the field.
19 The kings came and fought, then fought the kings of Canaan in Taanach [on dry land – with God’s word] by the waters of Megiddo [this appointed time, the rendezvous]; they took no gain of money.
20 They fought from heaven; the stars in their courses fought against Sisera [those arrayed for battle].
21 The river of Kishon swept them away, that ancient river, the river Kishon. O my soul, you have trodden down strength.
22 Then were the horse-hoofs broken by the means of the prancing, the prancing of their mighty ones.
23 Curse you Meroz [their refuge in which they trust], said the angel of the LORD, curse you bitterly the inhabitants thereof; because they came not to the help of the LORD, to the help of the LORD against the mighty.
24 Blessed above women shall Jael [Jehovah God in her] the wife of Heber the Kenite be [the community mingled with antichrists – those denying the LORD has appeared in our flesh], blessed shall she be above women in the tent.
25 He asked water, and she gave him milk; she brought forth butter in a lordly dish.
26 She put her hand to the nail, and her right hand to the workmen’s hammer; and with the hammer she smote Sisera, she smote off his head, when she had pierced and stricken through his temples.
27 At her feet he bowed, he fell, he lay down: at her feet he bowed, he fell: where he bowed, there he fell down dead.
28 The mother of Sisera looked out at a window, and cried through the lattice, Why is his chariot so long in coming? why tarry the wheels of his chariots?
29 Her wise ladies answered her, yea, she returned answer to herself,
30 Have they not sped? have they not divided the prey; to every man a damsel or two; to Sisera a prey of divers colors, a prey of divers colors of needlework, of divers colors of needlework on both sides, meet for the necks of them that take the spoil?
31 So let all your enemies perish, O LORD: but let them that love him be as the sun when he goes forth in his might. And the land had rest forty years.
Psalms 83
1 Keep not you silence, O God: hold not your peace, and be not still, O God.
2 For, lo, your enemies make a tumult: and they that hate you have lifted up the head.
3 They have taken crafty counsel against your people, and consulted against your hidden ones.

13 O my God, make them like a wheel [as a pattern from the past that all can see]; as the stubble before the wind.
14 As the fire burns a wood, and as the flame sets the mountains on fire;
15 So persecute them with your tempest, and make them afraid with your storm.
16 Fill their faces with shame; that they may seek your name, O LORD.
17 Let them be confounded and troubled for ever; yea, let them be put to shame, and perish:
18 That men may know that you, whose name alone is Jehovah, are the Most High over all the earth.
